30 Days Of Genius Will Ignite The Genius In You.
There's a common misconception that artists have a monopoly on creativity. But the very act of making something - shooting a photograph, designing a product, thinking critically, or building a business - is a creative one. These small actions come from our unique inner impulse to create.
This is what Richard Branson, Jared Leto and Arianna Huffington have in common. This is what makes Brené Brown, Tim Ferriss and Mark Cuban successful. They're all world-class achievers, but more than anything, they've used their creative impulse as both fuel and compass. It has allowed them to push on when others haven't, overcome obstacles thought impossible, and build a life of habits that sustain their mindset. And they'll be the first to tell you that their accomplishments are built on learned skills available to anyone.
In this free video series, you'll learn about the big thinking and breakthroughs that allowed these geniuses to break the mold. They'll share their successes and failures, and turn them into actionable insights for you. Join renowed photographer and CreativeLive Founder Chase Jarvis as he interviews 30 of the brightest minds of our time:

I really like the typography in this one. With the big bold lettering on the top page. I also like how smoothly the pages move as you scroll. The green color and letters that are repeated throughout, unifies this web page.

UX vs UI
Updated by Emil Lamprecht on April 15, 2016 | Career Foundry
We’ve all overheard conversations, walking down hip streets of the world’s tech capitals, discussions about the great ‘UX’ of a product, or the poor ‘UI’ of a website. Is it a secret language you will never be privy to? Are these people just using slang to look cool? Well, ok probably yes to the latter, but a determinate NO to the rest. Read on to learn what these terms mean, which jobs are better paid, and how to become a UX designer or UI designer. Scroll to the middle of the post to watch a video of me speaking about this article, and giving you some extra info on what being a UX or UI Designer really means.

UI, UX: Who Does What? A Designer's Guide To The Tech Industry | Fast Company
LO MIN MING 07.07.14 8:15 AM
Design is a rather broad and vague term. When someone says "I'm a designer," it is not immediately clear what they actually do day to day. There are a number of different responsibilities encompassed by the umbrella term designer.
Design-related roles exist in a range of areas from industrial design (cars, furniture) to print (magazines, other publications) to tech (websites, mobile apps). With the relatively recent influx of tech companies focused on creating interfaces for screens, many new design roles have emerged. Job titles like UX or UI designer are confusing to the uninitiated and unfamiliar even to designers who come from other industries.
Let's attempt to distill what each of these titles really mean within the context of the tech industry.

Lori's Websites examples
Light Theme: Eq Graphics
I really liked in the portfolio how you could see a peek of an image while you were scrolling to lead you to the next piece of work. I also thought the bar graphs were a nice touch as well
Dark Theme: Equine Originals
I like how you can see their work right from the start. Overall I found it easy to navigate. I'm not too crazy about the brown because it tends to overpower in some instances.
Typography: Crowley Webb
I thought this website had a good use of typography. There is clear text hierarchy which made it very easy to read through.

Web Portfolio
Dandy Punk is very successful with communicating a sense of darkness and weirdness with his imagery and typography. However, I would like to see the menu options have a bit more contrast with the background for the sake of readability. I like how the background stays constant even on the pages with content.

Muszynski Portfolio Sites
Alee Foroughi designed a really awesome portfolio site. My favorite part of the design is the layering of images and graphic elements over each other using shapes and transparencies. I like how the pace of the scrolling is different for different items. Also how image frames scroll across stationary images, revealing the image part by part. Her studio page has scrolling style I've never seen anything like before, its like radial. The seems complex but yet is simple as far as shapes and breathability.
I think the strength of Mike Kus' portfolio site comes from his use of images. The basic layout of his site uncomplicated and consistent, and serves to direct the attention of the viewer to the work instead of the site itself. The large images allow his work to speak for itself without a super complex structure holding the whole thing together.
Nic Stauber has a strong portfolio site. I find the simple starting animation super calming and oddly inspiring. The images he uses are very clear and strong. Shooting many different angles of his projects showcases them well. Several potential methods of navigation give the site versatility.

When I first saw the image above I really liked the layout and then I went to her page and overall I didn't like it. Personally I wasn't a big fan of rainbows and the overall vibe looked a bit unprofessional to me.

I really like her work and the easiness of her layout. It's easy to navigate and gets right to the point. I also like how you can roll over the artwork and it has the media and the size.

The name and the webpage title fight well together, with the grunge and dark layout. However with the writing at the top its hard to tell whether its the navigation bar.

I'm a fan of simplicity and this page is very simple. I like the loading hexagon that's at the bottom of the page. Even though there isn't a lot of colors this is a very intriguing page. I also like how you can scroll down the page and go to the separate sections but the nav bar is also there just in case you loose your spot.

I really like this portfolio because of the vintage feel, I believe he changed his first page from what he has now. But the overall layout is the same. However it is a little confusing because you don't know if you're looking at his work or advertisement.

Design Portfolios
Melanie Daveid
This portfolio had a lot of really cool features. I thought the high five button/illustration at the bottom was super creative. The only thing I did not like about her portfolio was that I found it slightly confusing to follow along.
Charolette Tang
I really liked how easy her portfolio was to navigate. I thought the circles went along with the glasses illustration really well and it helped tie in a theme. The way she displayed her work was really easy to understand as well.
Paul Currah
I like how you can see his work right from the get-go. What I found what set his portfolio apart was that you can look through his work by categories which makes it easier to pick through it.
Smart!
This portfolio I found to be a bit dull. The front page you can't really tell much from it. I like the idea of going from black and white to color for the portfolio images, however I think they could have added more color to the site overall and added a bit more information about the designers.
Super Awesome
I really liked the overall design with this portfolio. The only thing that I thought could be improved was the way they displayed their portfolio images. A little statement about each piece would have been nice.

Designer, Dare to Experiment
As designers, we often face the same kind of commissions. However, the internet and specifically websites have the power to be used as a creative and expressive medium. Looking at a website as an artistic medium will broaden your limits and encourage creativity. Ultimately, it will make you better in everyday commercial design.
Websites are generally used to sell, to inform and to entertain. Whenever you work with clients, you often face limits you must keep in mind. A particular style, perhaps linked to current trends in web design, a limited budget, certain features that have to be included on the website and harsh deadlines are just a few examples of challenges developers often face.

Tamara Midterm Post
For my midterm project I created an advertisement for my church. I have clouds flying across the sky and the dancing trees. I Oslo added a beating heart that gets larger and larger and then explodes, and our logo slowly fades into the screen. Overall I really liked how it turned out. Check it out in the google drive folder :).
muszynski-midterm
The animation I created was for Medusa Club in Elgin. This club is booked often as the venue for Chicago dubstep shows which i frequently attend. I redesigned the logo they sometimes use, which is medusa goddess figure with power cords instead of snakes, in illustrator then imported it into animate. I had trouble figuring out what type of tween to use because I was thinking of the animation I wanted as motion rather than shape shifting, since I wanted the width of the cords to remain constant. I ended up using shape tweens for the cords and motion tweens for the plugs to create a growing and shrinking snake-like appearance. Feel free to check out the animation in the google folder.

Midterm Project Post
My animation was very simple since this is very new to me. I was originally going to do a fish swimming for the Shedd Aquarium, but with the short deadline I adjusted it to do a dolphin for the dolphin show at Brookfield Zoo. I created the Dolphin, the water drops and the water spout in Illustrator and imported it to Animate. The Dolphin was left untouched while the water spout and the water drops were made with a motion tween. I used the transform tool to change the size and rotation of the water drops and skewed the water spout slightly. I also inserted keyframes to highlight the text to go along with when the water spout went up and down. The Dolphin show runs at Brookfield Zoo daily at 11:30am and 2:30pm.
Create a Video for MY MORAINE!
I wanted to let you know about a new project the library is doing this semester. It's called My Moraine, and it's a digital year book. We are asking students to submit short videos about their experiences on campus, things that have made an impact on them over the course of the past year. We will compile the videos into a single presentation that will be displayed in the library during the week of April 25th, with a deadline to submit by April 8th.
Students can create a video in any way that they want (Including submitting a Snapchat video). There is no template to follow. We'd like to get a genuine snapshot of what our students have been up to and experiencing over the past year.
I'd like to ask for your help in promoting the project on campus. It's a cool opportunity for students to be creative and also talk about Moraine Valley. I've attached a flier that you can feel free to forward to your students that has more details about the project. Mentioning it in class would also be a big help!
As always, librarians are here to help! We can help students capture video, edit the video, and everything in between. You or your students can contact me:
by email: matthewsd29@morainevalley.edu,
by phone: 708-608-4147
or just dropping by my office: L234 (Right next to the media lab)
Thanks for your time, and please let me know if you have any questions!

Temple of Dendur’s Lost Colors Brought to Life at the Met
Temple of Dendur’s Lost Colors Brought to Life at the Met
By JOSHUA BARONE, February 1, 2016
As depicted in popular culture, ancient Egypt is awash with the color beige. A trip to the Metropolitan Museum of Art would seem to reflect that notion: The Temple of Dendur, with its weatherworn sandstone, could fit in naturally with the earth tones of “Aida” or “The Mummy.”
But
Egyptologists know that this temple, like many others of the ancient
world, was painted with vivid colors and patterns. In “Color the
Temple,” a marriage of research and projection-mapping technology,
visitors to the Met can now glimpse what the Temple of Dendur may have
looked like in its original, polychromatic form more than 2,000 years
ago.
The Met’s MediaLab
has installed a projector that fills in the temple’s carvings with
color. Through March 19, one section of the structure’s south side is on
view: a scene of the Roman emperor Augustus, dressed as a pharaoh and
making an offering to the deities Hathor and Horus. Because the sun
would wash out the projector’s light (the gallery has floor-to-ceiling
windows), the scene is illuminated on Friday and Saturday evenings, when
the Met offers extended hours.

F216 Adobe Update
Hello Everyone,
Just a quick note regarding our Adobe Animate issue we faced in F216.
Adobe Animate is indeed part of the Creative Cloud. There was a licensing issue that occurred when the computers were re-imaged the week before. We will run the trial version for this week and then the computers will be re-imaged during Spring Break to resolve the issue.
Thank you for your patience while we looked into the matter.
All my Best,
Chris

Tamara's Animation Shorts
Billy's Balloon
I like this short film because of its simplistic drawings. This makes it easier to make multiple scenes because the same expression is used through the whole scene.
"Trapped in the drive thru"
I really like this one because of the words spoken in this short goes to the beat of the music. This short also uses simple shapes and vectors keeping the characters the same. I also like how when they are in the car or mad, they get larger than the person they are yelling at.
"Tone Deaf"
This is a CGI short and I like the playfulness of it and the textures/shades of colors that they added into the leaves and the trees to give it that 3D effect. WHen she gets into the dubstep part, they use brighter neon colors. They also made the characters shake and jump to show the loud and heavy beat.
"Tamara Short Film"
The message in this one is really because of the message. You cannot really tell that she is deaf until the ending. But this one also has the nice shades of color. In all the animated shorts i enjoy how each artist has their own style.
"Silly Symphony"
This one is an old time disney short. You can really tell that this one is a drawing because it has the various shades of gray. There's just something about the old fashioned animations that I like. In this short you can tell that the scenes stay the same because the trees are always in the same spot creating less work.

Tamara's Movie Title Sequence
"Up"
I like this title sequence because it touches on parts of the movie and the journey that Carl and Russel took. I also like the font because its fancy and elegant and goes along with the music. This title sequence perfectly fits the movie because just by seeing this you can sort of get a feel of what will happen in the movie.
"Monsters Inc"
I choose this one because first off this is one of my favorite Disney movies. This title sequence is my very favorite. Throughout the sequence this old time sort of tin pan alley theme is carried through, with the music and the door graphics. I noticed how the doors and parts of the words moves with the music.
"The Incredibles"
This one uses alot of gradients which gives more interest and edge to the sequence. The music definetely leads you to know that this is an action movie and with the "pow" effects and sounds. The scene has light colors when the music goes softer. The text and the scenes are intertwined in how they move and balance around each other.
"Life of Pi"
I posted this one because I wasn't really a big fan of it. Sure they had the orange colors, the indian music and the tiger but it didn't tell much about the movie or what the plot was.

FORMS IN NATURE: Understanding Our Universe
Monday, February 29, 2016
Lori Gaynor-Animation Blog Post
"Brain Divided"
This short had the music and mixed the emotions in well. The faster music went along with the more chaotic scenes well. The colors the "brain" went along with the character's personalities. Red we usually see as a crazier/mad side, while blue tends to be more calm.
Early Animation
The music in this played very well with each of the animation examples. It was very happy-go-lucky throughout the films which matched the scenes. Some of them were fairly easy to see how they were created, while others were a bit more complex.
Megalomaniac
This is probably the creepiest animation I have ever seen, but I believe that is this particular person's style. The very eerie music along with the skeleton characters really help set the mood. The only bad thing I would have to say is the plot line I found a bit difficult to understand.
Talking Blocks:Command Blocks
This little short was cute and the emotions displayed went well with the scene and the music. The music in the film gets quicker as the scene becomes more intense. The original scene is bright and happy, but once trouble starts it gets darker which increases the anxiety with the red color and faster music.
A Fox Tale
The music played a large part in this short. At first it was elegant and slow, to go with the sly fox/woman, but as the scenes grew more intense, so did the music. It was silent in the more dramatic scenes. When the characters got angry, the scene grew much darker with the thunderstorm. Overall I thought it was a good short film.

Lori Gaynor- Movie Trailer posts
Secretariat Trailer
This is a trailer to one of my favorite movies. I enjoyed watching this trailer because I like that it gives you the feeling of excitement through the flashes and music while the horse is racing. I also like that the clips used give you a little insight to each of the main characters and their personalities and allows you to get an accurate preview of the movie.
Pirates of the Caribbean Trailer
This trailer right from the start gives you an eerie feeling through the wave effect, the voices talking and the gold colors. Throughout the trailer the mood remains the same which depicts the movie quite well. The dark colors, the moonlight/graveyard type feel adds to that effect. There are small bits of excitement with the sword fight scenes built up through the flashes and the music.
Bad Grandpa Trailer
The Bad Grandpa trailer really lightens the mood through the colors in the opening scene. It's a bright sunny day and the scene itself is on the funny side. The flashes used reflect the scenes well. Throughout the trailers it's brighter scenes, and there are also many scenes with crashes that grab at peoples' reactions which is what the whole movie is about.
Dreamer Trailer
I like in this trailer that it starts of very dark and dreary and then by the end of it, it focuses more on the funny side and gets brighter. The colors were very dark, scenes were very depressing looking for most of the trailer. The only thing I would change would be to focus more on the brighter sides of the movie a little bit quicker. I like how it was focused on family and would have liked to see a little more interaction of the happier scenes between them.
Max Trailer
I recently saw this movie and the trailer is what originally drew me into it. I like how the dark slow flashes reflected the mood of the movie. It grabbed the tender love between the boy and the dog, even with the loud fireworks scene, it still showed the bond between both. I also really liked how it lightened the mood at the end of the trailer by showing some of the funnier scenes and they added the faster music to go along with the fast paced scenes.

josh-viewbooks
Temple University's school of the arts has a nice viewbook online. I like the use of full page images with text over them and the pattern used throughout.
The Art Academy of Cincinnati designed their viewbook well. The main feature of this design I like is the consistency of the blue shapes in the layout. It keeps the design easy to read and navigate with your eyes.
Moore College has a viewbook with some good and bad features. I like the full page images and quotes, but i do not think the way the red is used as a sort of highlighter in the beginning. I find it effective to differentiate headings, but do not like its aesthetic when used in sentences.
The University of the Arts used images effectively, but makes heavy use of colored text that is underlined, which tends to read as web links in the age of technology. This is somewhat interactive of the designs, with a clickable TOC, animations on page turn, and a navigation panel.
Brandies University had my favorite viewbook. The links on each page would flash highlight when you open the page. The blue color is used nicely throughout. There was a nice mix of image grids and full page images and an overall solid design.

Tamara's Viewbooks
Smith College Viewbook
I like this viewbook especially because of the color pallete and the pull quotes. I also like the large amount of pictures. It makes the viewbook look inviting.
Lasell College
On my computer this viewbook had moving parts and I like the interactivity and how the titles are links and direct you to the right page. It makes it easier to find information.
Amherst College
This viewbook is also beautiful with the large quality photos. However the words are small and hard to read. The overall layout is done well including the alphabet to give you information. This blog also shows a lot of student interaction and activity which the student would like to see.
Syracuse College
With this viewbook I felt that there was too much information on each page and I felt a bit overwhelmed.
Tulsa College
I got a lot of inspiration with this viewbook. I definitely like the bold colors and the big headings. It makes it easier to find what you're looking for. The particular page that I like is the facts page where they have the arrows to lead you around the page.

Lori's Viewbooks
Smith College
I liked how this viewbook was easy to navigate and there was even a sound effect as you flipped through the pages. I like how they used a collage of images on some of the pages.
Westminster College
I loved the images used in this viewbook. I liked how some connected to the next page which made it an interesting layout. The images of the mountains were a real eye catcher to me. Even though going to college has nothing to do with the scenery, it'd be nice to know that I could have something to do in down time.
Northland College
I liked how this viewbook was short and sweet. It grabbed your attention with the cover, and it was not overly long causing the viewer to loose interest. The images used were pretty interesting and peaked my interest in the page.
Geneva College
This viewbook was great because you could see it directly off their page without being redirected. The information and the pictures merged really easily with each other and love how they got interesting shots (like the aerial view).
